Eating Disorders Facts : Please explain Eating disorders ?
Common Eating disorders facts are not well known to common people, hence patients take a longer time to realise that they are having a eating disorder. Personally I realised at a much later stage that “I have an eating disorder”. Types of eating disorders : Commonly there are 2 types of eating disorder – Bulimia and Anorexia.
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder (ED) characterized by recurrent binge eating episodes (compulsive eating), followed by inappropriate compensatory behaviours. It is found in people whose self-evaluation is excessively influenced by body image and weight.
When a person suffers from Anorexia, the person has has intense fear of gaining weight and as a results stops eating food.Someone with anorexia thinks about food a lot and limits the food she or he eats, even though she or he may be too thin.In extreme cases, it may lead to death.
Eating disorder recovery is easy if a proper treatment program is followed religiously.

In my point of view, eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) originates from a poor self-perception, low self-confidence and body image. Usually the binging from bulimia is done by unhealthy fast food which later makes you feel so guilty that you throw them out.Later this becomes a habit.
It is very difficult to get out of this problem of binging and purging without medical help. I tried many self medications and followed many advises. At last, I visited few eating disorder treatment centers and followed the BULIMIA-HELP treatment program which helped me a lot to recover.
You can get more info on BULIMIA-HELP treatment program here.
How did you become anorexic and bulimic?
My condition started near the end of my freshman year of high school. The anorexia was easier for me to hide. I slowly stopped eating without anyone really noticing. Because my high school had off-campus lunch, there was never much accountability for what I was eating or how much I ate. As long as I ate around my family, I didn’t have to worry.
The bulimia started as an accident. Once I realized that making myself vomit does not hurt like it does when you have the flu or you’re sick, I found it was an easy release for me when I felt stressed or upset. I controlled my food intake with purging.
Did your family and friends notice your anorexia and bulimia?
In the begining no. But when Bulimia had full control over me, my friends started noticing. I would eat fast and order one more plate in the school canteen. Potato chips, chocolate, burgers, wafers and what not was always stuffed inside my bag. I used to hide the bag from all, but all knew I was carrying a lot of food. Often I was found sitting alone in some corner and eating. Later my friends would find me in the restroom.I used to put the shower or the tap open and vomit. I thaught no one can hear me if the shower is on. My family noticed the abnormality earlier itself, they realised I was going through a bad phase.
When did you felt that you need treatment ?
In childhood I was slim and fit. I used to eat a lot of food..anything that tasted good to me.But as I grew up, I started controlling my eating habit. In the back of my mind I thaught it was not good to eat so much and slowly a guilt developed. I dont know when this guilt turned into the eating disorder.I was scare and depressed after every meal and would run to the bathroom to vomit. This made me desperate to find a solution.
Which treatment helped you to recover from eating disorder ?
Unfortunately I started taking proffesional help very late, still I am glad that I recovered. I was very shy to share my problems and hence never spoke about it. I knew I needed to make a decision. I needed help to stop me from binging and purging. First I joined a Bulimia online community and from that community I came to know about the BULIMIA HELP PROGRAM. This is a self help treatment program and takes care of your privacy. I gained self confidence and started to recoverand it took 8 weeks to feel the difference. Once I started feeling the difference, I followed the program sincerely and I am much better person today. This is my best eating disorders facts !
How is your eating disorder recovery coming along?
My treatment has been successful so far. I am recovering well. I have overcome my binging and purging problems. Now following the treatment program seriously to that I dont get back to the same disorders once again. That is my aim at the moment. Also I want to share my story to help others to battle eating disorders. Talking about my experience with anorexia and bulimia has helped me to better understand the diseases themselves and heal. I have a better understanding of my past behaviors. But I do still think about my eating disorders in the back of my mind.
What advice do you give to young women who are facing eating disorders?
Never feel ashamed of the problem you have. We all face some or the other problems in life.Be open and share the problem with your family or friends. It is much easy to come out of a eating disorder if treated at a much early stage. Dont wait too long without help like I did. There are many women suffering from eating disorders, you are not alone. It is a very common disease so don’t feel shy.
Don’t feel ashamed of what you are going through! So many more people go through this than are willing to talk about it. Many times we only see severe cases in the media or on television. A lot of the time, that’s the problem. Some people can’t identify with the serious cases of eating disorders they see on TV and they don’t get help as a result. Eating disorders don’t have a face. They affect so many different kinds of people from all walks of life. Many times, eating disorders are happening right in front of us. No one should feel afraid to reach out for help.
What kinds of things do you like to do to stay healthy?
I like to be engaged as when you are engaged your mind don’t play with you. I write blogs, meet bulimic patients and party !! I am regular to gym and yoga and my diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables. I avoid processed or junk food. I love vacations with my family. Currently my aim is to stop Eating disorders from coming back to my life.
